I need to verify that changes I'm making to a website look good in several browsers. When I installed IE 7, I believe IE 6 was deleted and now a reinstall of IE 6 aborts with "Setup has detected a newer version on the system".
What can be done?
(For personal use, I do not plan on using either of these browsers.)

No, you can't. If you want to use both, then you need to keep installing and uninstalling ie7, when you uninstall ie7, ie6 gets put back on.

There are softwares specifically designed to check if a web site is viewable by diff browsers. Code it for the most ancient browser and it will be okay.
Get Mozilla FireFox, its faster, easier and much safer than IE 6 or 7
